Day 2 After Surgery

I apologize that I missed posting yesterday....I was just wiped out.

Matthew was in a lot of pain yesterday, but today was a little better.  He got up and walked yesterday, and Mom said he walked at least 3 times today.  So far the doctor's are pleased with his vitals and test results. He started on clear liquids today, which is good progress as well.  It means that his body is starting to function as it should.

In the next several weeks, Matthew will have to be on a very low fat and high protein diet.  The liver has to work very hard to process fats.

Her is currently in room 514 at M.D. Anderson.  He is well on track to go home on Monday or Tuesday.

As as side note, at times, Matthew will ask if anybody has anything to say on the blog.  If you would like to comment or send him a message, I will be sure to share it with him.

  1. I don't think I knew your brother well, but just to comment that I think everyone is thinking and praying for him! I wish him the best possible recovery and outcome for this fight he's been through and continuing. Keep up the good fight and feel better soon! :)

  3. The Mannino's had a very interesting visit with Matthew and his parents Saturday evening, as our visit coincided with the relay exchange of guardians. We met Matthew running down the hall pushing his medical pole with Mom in tow. He was is good spirits and walked farther than Amanda had seen him. I for one could barely stand upright and walk because I was laughing so hard at Matthews comments. "I have more bags than a bag lady", etc. Back in his room, Matthew entertained us with his trip to the junkyard (recycling center) story. The folks there were concerned about a radiation level they detected upon his arrival. It took a few minutes to uncover the source....Matthew walking around with radiation in his system from a PET scan he had the day before.
All in all he looks good and has his sense of humor. The doctors will release him once his body fully "wakes up" and all his systems are functioning again. His recovery has been satisfactory according to the doctors.
We are keeping up the prayers and giving thanks.
    Naomi
